As the father of three children under the age of five, I watch a lot of kid shows. Walk in to my house and you are likely to find The Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, or Sesame Street on the TV at any given time, sometimes just as background noise to help drown out the sounds emanating from the aforementioned three kids under five. One of my favorite shows is called "The Wonder Pets". It's an animated show about a duck, a turtle, and a guinea pig who fly around helping other animals who get in trouble, typically stuck somewhere. The tagline is that the show helps kids understand the benefit of sharing, helping others, being a good friend, and teamwork. Whenever they fly off to help someone, there's a song that they sing which has the line, "What's gonna work? Teamwork!" which is repeated twice. I find myself asking my children this question often when they need help, when I need their help, so they understand the importance of teamwork and helping others.
Last month, we had two members of our team leave CBRE. I was a bit frustrated at the time and even had thoughts of disbanding the team, continuing to work with my long time partner, Joe Sarno, and simply bringing in others on an as-needed basis. Most brokers work that way and after 11 years on a team that has ranged from three to eight people, I had a quick thought that maybe it was time to try it a different way.
I quickly changed course. I enjoy the camaraderie of a team, the collaboration that our meetings encourage, working with my partners to solve the problems of the day, and passing along some of the knowledge that I have accumulated to those with less experience.
There are very successful brokers who work alone. For me, I choose the team environment as I believe that I take out more than I put in. A good team is one where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. After all, what's gonna work?
So to that end, we are looking for a few new people. Anyone out there interested?
