Lesson for Young Brokers from Jackson Browne

It's been a while since I posted and even longer since I posted a lesson for young brokers. I am hopeful that I get back into a regular rhythm, and appreciate you reading, as always.

Jackson Browne’s classic Running on Empty has long been a favorite, but I really connected with the song after recently seeing a very stripped-down version in small venue.

“Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels…”

It’s hard to look beyond where we are at any specific moment in time. It’s even harder to look beyond ourselves, especially when things are really good or really bad.

“I don’t where I’m running now, I’m just running on…”

Wherever you are at a given time is only a moment in time. Sometimes, we are so busy and wrapped up in the events of the day that we don’t take notice of where we stand or where we are going.

“Everyone I know, everywhere I go, people need some reason to believe…”

Life isn’t always easy, but what we typically don’t remember is that it’s not easy for everyone. There’s always someone we think has life figured out or has no problems. We all have our moments. Some more than others.

I have three amazing kids, a great job, the best family anyone could ask for and a girlfriend who is simply above my level in every way. When people ask me how I am doing, my typical response is, “awesome”, and I truly believe it. Not every minute of the day is awesome, but I try my best to focus on the great parts of life.

That said, I get down too. We all do.

“I don't know about anyone but me.”

We rarely know what other people are going through. Did the person we just spoke to have a fight with their spouse this morning? Do they have a sick kid at home? It's not always about us. Not only that, they have no idea what's going on with you at any given moment. Right?

“Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through. Looking into their eyes I see them running too…”

If you can find some friends who you can really be honest with and really share with, it helps when things aren’t awesome. I promise, there will be times when they lean on you too, and that’s the magic of a great friendship.

Therein lies the magic of this song and the lesson. We’re all making our way through life, doing the best we can. Sometimes what helps more than anything else is  providing empathy and understanding to those who may be going through something about which we have no idea. . Everyone’s tank hits empty, and simply knowing that I am not the only one gives me some reassurance that it will be full again in short order.
